Hydrotherapy Sessions @ Wyvern Academy

What is Hydrotherapy

Hydrotherapy (sometimes called aquatic therapy) is the use of water to provide therapeutic effects on the musculoskeletal, neural rehabilitation, as often used in physical therapy. Our hydrotherapy pools are heated to around 33OC. This allows for the patient to fully relax, promotes pain relief and encourages circulation.

Our Hydrotherapy Pools promote easily accessible and have a hoists available to lower people into the water as well as easy access steps for the more able bodied to use

Hydrotherapy uses the principles of water to allow exercise and to alter exercise intensity. Increased buoyancy allows for more exercise than is permitted on land. Increased temperature and hydrostatic pressure promote increases in circulation and flexibility and decreases in swelling. Increasing speed, turbulence and surface area can all be used to increase exercise difficulty.

Benefits of Hydrotherapy

Hydrotherapy can be very useful in treating many different types of soft tissue, bone injury as well as neuromuscular conditions such as muscular dystrophy.

The benefits of hydrotherapy include:

Pain relief.

Reduction in muscle spasm

Increased joint range of motion

Strengthening of weak muscles

Increased circulation

Improvement of balance and co-ordination

Re-education of paralysed muscles

Uses of Hydrotherapy

Hydrotherapy may be useful in the following conditions:

Back pain

Arthritis - both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Musculoskeletal conditions - such as frozen shoulder, ankle sprains and groin strains

Following surgery for conditions such as knee replacement, hip replacement, ACL reconstruction

Neurological conditions including Muscular Dystrophy, Cerebral Palsy, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinsons Disease

After strokes or head injuries

Because of the buoyancy of the water, hydrotherapy allows many individuals to exercise, where they wouldn't be able to on land. The effect of this increased buoyancy and decreased gravitational force means that there is less stress on weight bearing joints such as the knees and hips and many movements can be performed in water before they would be possible on land.

The Hydrotherapy Swimming Sessions, are open to all people to attend.  But must be pre-booked before you attend.

The Hydrotherapy Swimming Sessions are designed as sessions for you to exercise at your own pace and working towards your own goals. If you feel you would benefit from a little more guidance on what exercises would be best, please speak to one of our hydro-cise instructors who can happily point you in the right direction or even write you a full aquatic program, for further details please click here

The benefits of hydrotherapy are so great, you don't even need to be referred by a doctor to use the pool.
